A series of tweets that got me thinking, as someone who is still arguing about Windows versus Mac in 2018
Trying to remember how long people kept arguing about Windows versus Mac after it became clear that the web was all that mattered.— Benedict Evans (@benedictevans) October 16, 2018
Funny to think there are probably twice as many iPads in use today as there were PCs on earth when Windows 95 launched.— Benedict Evans (@benedictevans) October 16, 2018
Anyone who has an opinion about tech probably creates stuff on PCs with complex ‘pro’ apps. But all of us combined add up to at most 10% of the installed base of PCs. Perhaps 100m people. There are over 1bn PCs on earth. What are (were) they used for?— Benedict Evans (@benedictevans) October 16, 2018
I am definitely in the 10% category, and I think my target audience is as well. Professionals making stuff on PCs is a pretty old/stable market. Many other presentation apps are aiming for the 900m and many of them branch out to other types of content than just business presentations. But 100m is still a big number. I am working hard on making those pro apps a bit less “pro”.
